LESSON FOUR
Introduction:
Talking Circle and First Nations Music, i.e. Susan Agooluk (West point of Medicine Wheel)
What is the Big Idea? Storytelling is the art of knowledge.
Recap what we have learned about First Nations storytelling.
Group work: New story for each group
Technique : Venn Diagram
Presentation:
Give each student a new story from the collection of First Nations stories.
Have students read the story.
Have them underline the parts of the story that interests them.
Introduce the Venn Diagram with examples.
(See Appendix for a more complete explanation).
A Venn diagram is a diagram that has two circles that connect. It is a comparison between the old Mi'Kmaq story of the Weasel sisters and the new First Nations story.
Students are to ask:
What are the common themes?
What are the main ideas that both stories tell the people?
Where do the stories connect?
Then students are to collect the information and begin to develop a Venn Diagram. For this assignment, students add five points showing similarities in the story. Then they enter five points discussing the differences between the two stories. Ensure that the "different" points are lined up opposite each other.
Assessment and Evaluation
Present Venn diagram at the end of class.
Use rubric to evaluate diagram and presentation.
Teacher Presentation / Materials / Planning Notes
Summarize the work done to date.
Become familiar with Venn Diagrams.
This can be done either in a group or individually. A Venn diagram represents the similarities and differences between two conditions. It represents and conveys ideas and information in a visual, graphic form.
Photocopy a variety of other stories from any of the First Nations sources outlined in the bibliography.
Prepare a rubric to assess the Venn diagram.
