| Electricity and Energy Youth Camp |
|
This past summer, Aboriginal youth participated in an exciting summer camp aimed at building future opportunities in the electricity and energy sectors. They were in involved in a series of special projects that included generating electricity by powering a model hydro-electric turbine with a water gun; harnessing the sun’s energy by building and racing a solar powered car; and having fun with BeetleBot, a little creature created by soldering complex circuits.
The goal of the camp, according to Catherine Cottingham, ESC Executive Director and CEO, is “to develop a better understanding of the role electricity plays in day-to-day life, where it comes from, how it is generated, how it gets to where it is needed and how it’s used.” The camp, which ran the week of August 17 – 21, is part of Electricity Sector Council’s Bright Futures Camp in association the Thunder Bay Aboriginal Head Start Program. Electricity and energy-themed camps are aimed to expose youth to future career opportunities in the industry
